Prep time: 1 hr prep, 8 hrs soaking, 24 hrs pickling

Ingredients

  • 1 salted herring
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 tsp pickling spice
  • vinegar

Instructions for Preparation

Clean one salt herring and remove head, fins, tail and scales. Soak overnight in cold water. In the morning, drain and cut fish into 1/2-in. wide pieces. Place in container and cover with vinegar. Place sliced onion and pickling spice on top of fish. Set in a cool place for at least 24 hours. Serve with bread and butter. Requires no cooking, is very economical and very tasty.
